How are you qualified to help people navigate the healthcare system?
Having been a healthcare professional for over 18 years, I have learned the ins and outs of the system. I am a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner receiving my Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my Master of Science in Nursing from New York University. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management (medical billing, coding, insurance, informatics, electronic records, Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement) from East Carolina University.
My experience spans across a wide range of disciplines including direct patient care (critical care, cardiology, interventional cardiology, neurosurgery, onsite health, and general medicine), administration, operations, teaching and consulting. I have also practiced as a private patient advocate/care coordinator helping patients navigate the healthcare system and resolve issues with medical bills.
What qualifies me most, I believe, is my passion for social justice when it comes to healthcare. Our system has failed us greatly when folks have to file bankruptcy because of medical debt or set up GoFundMe pages to pay their healthcare bills.
Using Prudent Patient as my platform, I hope to help as many people as I can become actively engaged in their healthcare. You’ll get better, safer, more affordable care if you understand your conditions and treatments, know what questions to ask and can figure out those damn medical bills.
Is the information on your site relevant to anyone, in any country?
All patients, everywhere, can benefit from becoming active participants in their own healthcare.
While a lot of information on Prudent Patient is relevant to patients everywhere, some content is specific to folks residing in the United States (especially content regarding legislation, medical bills, and health insurance). More general topics, such as understanding your conditions and treatment options, coordinating care or finding the right doctors, apply to anyone!
